$SNE, MASSIVE DOUBLE DICK INSIDE. Poised to moon long-term (Computer vision boom, EV boom, autonomous driving tech, gaming boom, music streaming boom, cross-media IP, vertically integrated anime streaming monopoly, online medical services boom, shift to mirrorless cameras)
Listen up retards. Do you happen to feel regret because you always think “ohhh if I yoloed my savings on TSLA/AMD/NVDA 🚀 leaps years ago I could be rich by now!!!”
Well if you didn't know already, it doesn’t really matter what happened in the past. Hindsight will always be 20/20. You shouldn’t be harsh on yourself on your past self that your past self wasn’t retarded enough to yolo their savings into AMD/TSLA/.... Your past self doesn’t have the same knowledge that your current self has. It’s fine. If you judged those stocks with the best DD you could do at the time and didn’t think they were worth it, then you did a good job.
If you always think about what you could/should have done in the past, then you don't have the right attitude to play the stock market casino imho.
The single most important thing is to be able to look ahead. There are always plenty of opportunities around. There are thousands of rockets that are still on earth right now. Some may depart this year, others will stay a little longer on earth. The true strength lies in being able to identify those rockets with the knowledge you have right now. And if you still miss most rockets that will take-off this year that's fine, maybe you'll learn, get better and you'll do better next year.
Now, what if I told you there’s a big rocket that’s parked right right here on earth and it has decent chance for take-off this year? Maybe it won't quite reach the moon this year yet, but hey leaving the exosphere should already be a cool milestone.
It has rock-solid fundamentals and will see lots of growth in the following years/decade.
It’s a company that has the fundamental technology to power all the computer vision tech, which is bound to boom this decade.
The company we’re talking about is of course Sony, and it is extremely undervalued right now.
Its P/E is only 14. They have a P/S of 1.65, a PEG of 0.92 (< 2 is already somewhat exceptional for a company/conglomerate of Sony’s size, under 1 is a steal)
Much lower than all of its same-sector peers. This indicates significant undervaluation.
Next up Sony has a P/CF 13.2, ROE of 20% (S&P 500 average is 14% which would already be considered pretty good. 20% ROE is excellent), PEGY of 0.89, P/B of 2.65 and finally Sony has $41.6B in cash on hand. This makes Sony one of the cheapest tech/entertainment/EV/semiconductor growth stocks you will find on the market.
(ROE of 20% + PEGY of 0.89 + PEG of 0.92 means this company is a growth stock based on the numbers alone, but we’ll dig into the actual company and overall outlook in a moment)
I challenge all retards to find a company with similar benchmarks in one of the mentioned sectors, seriously.
Quite frankly doing this DD honestly blew my mind. I kept looking everywhere for reasons why the company could be so undervalued and why they may struggle in the future. Very important to look at all the challenges the company faces to make sure I’m not just doing confirmation bias DD. But all I could find was the opposite. After several weeks and months of working on this DD, I can only conclude that it is overall a very solid company for a bargain price. The new CEO is taking the company in a great direction imho and I'm begin to think he could be Sony's Satya Nadella.
So if you want some easy tendies, maybe consider $SNE while it is still cheap, I’d say.
For the autists out there who care about analyst ratings, SONY ($SNE) currently has 18 BUY ratings, 2 OVERWEIGHT, 4 HOLD and 0 SELL. (= analyst consensus is a STRONG BUY). Very little analysts cover this stock compared to other entertainment/tech companies, so this adds to my assertion that the stock is very much under the radar. Which means you have time to get in before it gets noticed by the larger investing world and before it starts to get a more fair valuation (P/E of around 30 would be more fair for this company I think, but still cheaper than many same sector peers). But, anyway the few analysts who do happen to cover this company are basically all saying it’s an instant-buy at its current price.
Most boomer investors still think big Japanese tech companies are dinosaurs that have long been surpassed by China, South Korea and Apple etc ages ago. Young boomers may think Sony = PlayStation and that it's it. But the truth is that PlayStation, while very important (about 24% of Sony's total revenue last year), is a part of a larger story.
Lots of investors in general associate Sony with the passé Japanese electronics companies from the 80’s and the 90’s. Just like a lot people may think BlackBerry is a struggling phone company.
While Sony may not be the powerhouse in consumer electronics it was in the 80’s and the 90’s, in a lot of ways they are more relevant than ever before. Despite being a well-known brand and being known as the company behind PlayStation, for some reason its stock still seems to be under the radar among both retail and institutional investors. And boy, are they mind-blowingly undervalued. Even if a big part of its business would collapse tomorrow, they would still be slightly undervalued. And I am about to tell you why.
(& btw compared to Japanese tech/entertainment stocks $SNE is still super cheap (Canon, Nikon, Toshiba, Sharp, Panasonic, Square Enix, Capcom, Nintendo, Fujitsu all have P/E ratios ranging from 18 to 77 and none of them have the combination of global clout, fundamentals & growth prospects that Sony has))
2021 Sony as a corparation is not the fucking Sony from 2005-2015’s, just like BlackBerry in 2021 is not the fucking Blackberry from 2012. Just like Garmin in 2021 is not Garmin from 2011. Just like AMD in 2021 is not AMD from 2012.
No, in 2021, Sony is the global leader in imaging technology and people do not fucking realize it. Sony has 50% marketshare in the CMOS image sensor market. There’s a very good chance the smartphone in your pocket has Sony image sensors (unless it’s a Samsung phone). Sony image sensors are powering a big part of today's vision/camera technology. And they will power even more of tomorrow's computer vision tech.
In 2021, Sony is a behemoth in video games, music, anime, movies and TV show production. Sony is present in every segment of entertainment. Sony’s entertainment branches have been doing great business over the past 5 years, especially music and PlayStation. Additionally, Sony Pictures has completely turned around.
In 2021, Sony is the world’s biggest music publisher (and second biggest music company overall). Music streaming has been a boon for Sony Music and will continue to be.
In 2021, Sony is among the biggest mobile gaming companies in the world (yes, you read that right). And it’s mainly thanks to one game (Fate/Grand Order) that nets them over $1B revenue each year. One of the biggest mobile gaming companies + arguably biggest gaming brand in the world (PlayStation).
In 2021, Sony is an EV company. They surprised the world when they revealed their “Vision-S” at CES 2020. At the reception was fantastic. It is seriously one of the best looking EV’s. They already sell sensors to Toyota. Sony will most like sell the Vision-S's tech to other car manufacturers (sensors for driving assistence / autonomous driving, LiDAR tech, infotainment system).

40 sensors in the Sony Vision-S
Considering the overwhelmingly good reception of the Vision-S so far, I suspect the Vision-S could be another catalyst that will put Sony as a company on the radar of investors and consumers.
We've seen insane investment hype for anything even remotely related to EV over the past year. We've seen a company that barely had a few EV design concepts (oh wait, they had a gravity-powered truck though) even get a $30B market cap at some point lmao.
But somehow a profitable company ($SNE) that has an EV that you can actually drive, doesn't even have a fair valuation?
In 2020’s Sony’s brand value is at their highest point since 12 years. In 2021, it is projected to be a its highest point since 2001 assuming same growth as average yearly growth from 2015 to 2020. Keep in mind brand valuation is a bit bullshitty as there’s no standardization to compare brands from different sectors, let alone non-consumer-facing brands with consumer-facing brands. But one thing we can note is that Sony both as B2C brand and as a B2B company is on a big upwards trend.
https://interbrand.com/best-global-brands/sony/
https://careers.uw.edu/blog/2020/03/17/these-are-the-10-biggest-video-game-companies-in-north-america-shared-article-from-zippia/
In 2021, Sony is an entertainment behemoth. They have grown their entertainment branches by a huge amount over the past 5 to 10 years (they made some big acquisitions in the music space especially and they’re now also all-in in anime). I don’t think people realize how big Sony is as an entertainment company. I dug up the numbers and as of Q3 2020, PlayStation is the second biggest video game company in the world (Tencent is #1) in revenue (I suspect Sony might dethrone Tencent after Sony’s FY Q3 2020 is released). But Sony already comes very close to Tencent especially if you add Fate/Grand Order (which is under Sony Music and not under PlayStation) under PlayStation.
There’s no single other company that has this unique combination of a dominant/important position in all entertainment segments. (video games + music + movies + TV series + anime + TV networks). I guess Tencent maybe?
In 2021, Sony has amazing momentum in the camera space. If you’re familiar with the enthusiast photography space, you should know this. Basically, the market is slowly shifting from SLR to mirrorless cameras. This is because mirrorless cameras tend to smallelighter, have faster AF, better low light performance, better battery life and better video performance. Sony is the company that has been specializing in the development for mirrorless cameras for over a decade while Canon’s bread and butter has always been SLR cameras. Sony is in the lead when it comes to mirrorless cameras and that’s where the market is shifting towards. Because the advantages of mirrorless have become more and more apparent and Sony’s cameras have become technically superior, Sony has gained quite a bit of market share over Canon and Nikon in the last few years. In 2019, Sony overtook Nikon as the #2 camera manufacturer. Sony is in an upwards trend here. (they have the ambition to become the world’s #1 camera brand) Sony also has very good marketing for their cameras. (Sony has a lot of YouTubers / influencers / brand ambassadors for their cameras despite being a smaller brand than Canon)
(just search on YouTube and/or Google “switching to Sony from Canon” just to give you an idea that they do have amazing brand momentum in the camera space. You won’t get as many hits for the opposite)
A huge portion of Sony’s profit comes from image sensors in addition to music and video games. This is in addition to their highly profitable financial holdings division & their more moderately profitable electronics division.
Sony’s electronics division, unlike other Japanese brands, has shown great resilience against the very strong competition from China & South Korea. They have been able to maintain their position in the audio space and as of 2020 are still the global market leader in high-end TV’s (a position they have been holding for decades) and it seems they will continue to be able to maintain that.
But seriously this company is dirt-cheap compared to any of its peers in any segment and there’s various huge growth prospects for Sony:
  • CMOS image sensors & Sony’s overall imaging prowess will boom due to increased demand from automotive sector, security & surveillance industry, manufacturing industry, medical sector and finally from the aerospace & defence industry. On the longer term, image sensors will continue to boom due to increased demand for computer vision & AI + robotics. And for consumer electronics demand will remain very high obviously.
  • Sony is aiming for 60% market share in the CMOS image sensor market by 2026. Biggest threat here is Samsung here who have recently started to aggressively invest in image sensors and are challenging Sony. Sony has technological lead + higher production capacity (and Sony will soon open a new plant in Nagasaki), so Sony should be able to hold off Samsung.
  • The iPhone 12 Pro has 3 cameras + a lidar sensor. Apple now buys 3 image sensors (from Sony) + LiDAR sensor (from Sony) per iPhone 12 Pro they manufacture. Remember the iPhone X and iPhone XS? That one had “only” 2 rear cameras (with image sensos from Sony of course). Basically, Sony will be selling exponentially more image sensors as more smartphones get equipped with more and more cameras.
  • Now think about how many image sensors Sony can sell to Apple if the iPhone 13 will have 5 cameras + LiDAR sensor (I mean the number of cameras on smartphones certainly won’t decrease)
  • Gaming (PS5 hype, PSN game sales are booming, add-on content is booming, PS+ subscribers count is booming and finally PSNow & first-party games sales are trending upwards as well). Very consistent year-on-year profit & revenue growth here. They have a history of beating earnings expectations here. The number of PS+ subscribers went from 4M to 48M in just 6-7 years. Investors love to hype up recurring revenue and subscription services such as Disney+ and Netflix. Let’s apply the same logic to PS+? PS+ already has more subscribers than HBO Max in the USA.
  • PlayStation (video games in general) has not even scratched the fucking surface. Most people who play video games now are millennials and kids. Do you think those millennials will stop playing video games when they grow older? No, of course not. Boomers today also still watch movies and TV. Those millennials have kids and those kids are now also playing video games. The kids of those kids will also play video games etc. Basically the total addressable audience for video games will by HUGE by the end of the decade (and the decades after that) because video games will have penetrated all age ranges of the population. Gaming is the fastest growing segment of the whole entertainment business. By a large margin. PlayStation is obviously in a great position here as you can guess from the PS5 hype, but more importantly imho, the growth of PS+ subscribers (currently a bit under 50 million) and PSN users (>100 million MAU) over the past 5 years shows that PlayStation is primed to profit from the audience growth.
  • On top of that you have huge video game growth in the China where Sony & PlayStation is already much better established than Xbox (but still super small compared to mobile games and PC gaming in China). Within the console market, Xbox only competes with PlayStation in North America. In the rest of the world, PlayStation has an enormous lead over Xbox. Xbox is simply a lesser known and lesser desirable brand in the rest of the world
  • Anime streaming (basically they have a monopoly already + vertical integration, it might still be somewhat niche right now, but it will be big within 5 years. Acquiring Crunchyroll was a very good move)
  • Music streaming (no, they don’t have a music streaming service, but as music streaming grows, Sony Music also gets a piece of the growing pie through licensing/royalties, and they also still have a little 2.8% stake in Spotify)
  • Apple, Amazon, Netflix, AT&T and Disney are currently battling it out in the streaming wars. When there’s a war you have little chances of winning, you shouldn’t be the one waging the war. You should be the one selling the ammo. Basically Sony Pictures (tv shows + movies) is in that position. Sony Pictures can negotiate good prices for their content because Apple, Amazon, Netflix, AT&T are thirsty for content and they all want their own exclusive content. Sony Pictures does not need to prop up their own streaming service just like Sony Music doesn’t need their own music streaming service when they can just license out their content and turn a profit. There will always be demand for TV & movies content, so Sony Pictures is well positioned is as an independent content provider. And while Apple, Amazon, Netflix, AT&T and Disney are battling it out on the forefront, Sony is quietly building their anime empire in the background. Genius business move from Sony here, seriously. They now have anime production & distribution.
  • Netflix has 200M subscribers and they currently have a 250M market cap. Think about what Sony will have in 5 years? >30M Crunchyroll subscribers (assuming all anime will be consolidated into Crunhyroll) & >100M PS+ & PSNow subscribers? Anime and gaming is growing faster than movies and TV shows. (9% CAGR for anime, 12% CAGR for gaming vs. 5% CAGR for the whole movies & TV show entertainment segment which includes PVOD, SVOD, box office, TV etc etc). And gaming as a whole is MUCH bigger than SVOD streaming. Netflix gets 99% of their revenue & profit through subscriptions. For the whole Sony Group Corporation, their subscription services (games + anime) it’s currently only 4.5% of their total revenue. And somehow Sony currently has a meagre $128B market cap?
  • PlayStation alone is bigger than Netflix in terms of operating profit. PlayStation has a MUCH higher profit margin than Netflix. For Q3 2020 Netflix posted $790M operating profit and PlayStation posted $988M operating profit. Revenue was was $6.44B for Netflix vs. $4.77B for PlayStation. (and btw Sony’s mobile gaming revenue (~$1B / year) is under Sony Music, it is not even in those PlayStation numbers!!!)
  • Think about it. PlayStation alone posts bigger operating profit than Netflix (yes revenue is bit smaller, but it’s the operating profit that matters most). And gaming is growing faster than movies. And PlayStation is about 24% of Sony’s total revenue. And yet Netflix has a market cap that is equal to the double of Sony's market cap? Basically If you apply Netflix’ valuation to PlayStation then PlayStation alone should have a bigger market cap than Netflix' market cap.

PS+ growth and software digital ratio growth

  • Sony Vision-S & autonomous driving tech (selling sensors + infotainment system to other car manufacturers). Sony surprised everyone when they revealed their Sony Vision-S electric vehicle last year at CES 2020 (in-house design and made in cooperation with Magna Steyr). And it’s currently being tested on public roads. Over the past year we have seen absurdly big investment hype into anything even remotely related to EV’s (including a few questionable companies). We’ve even seen an EV company with a gravity-powered truck get a $30B market cap in June last year. Meanwhile Sony, out of nowhere, revealed what is arguably (subjectively) one of the best looking EV’s. It got very positive reception at CES 2020. An EV that you can actually drive. But somehow their stock is still dirt-cheap based on their current fundamentals alone? Yet some companies that had pretty much nothing but some EV design concepts got insane valuations purely due to hype?
  • LTE chips for IoT & Industry 4.0 (Altair Semiconductors)
  • Cross-media IP (The Last of Us show on HBO, Uncharted movie etc). Huge unrealized potential synergy here (it’s about to change). We have seen that it can turn out super well when you look at The Witcher, Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu. When The Witcher released on Netflix, sales of The Witcher 3 significantly increased again. Imagine the same thing, but with Sony IP’s. Sony Pictures is currently working on 7 video game IP based TV shows and 3 movies. We know The Last of Us tv series is currently in production for HBO. And then the Uncharted is currently in post-production and scheduled to be released in July this year currently. If Uncharted turns out to be successful, it will mark a big, new milestone for Sony as an entertainment company imho.
  • Aniplex (Sony Music Entertainment Japan subsidiary for anime production, distribution & mobile games) had a fantastic year in 2020. (more on this later) There is a lot of room for mobile games growth with Aniplex. Thanks to Aniplex, Sony might beat their earnings forecast.
  • Drones. DJI just got put on Entity List in USA and Sony started developing drones for prosumer / professional a few years ago. Big opportunity for Sony here to take a bit from DJI’s dominance. It only makes sense for Sony to enter the drone market targeting the professional & prosumer video market, considering Sony’s established position in the professional audio/video/photography space
  • Currently Sony also has several ventures & investments in AI & robotics
  • Over the past decade, Sony has also carefully expanded into medical equipment tech & biotechnology. Worth noting that Sony also has an important 33% stake in M3 inc (a medical services through-the-internet company with a market cap of $65.5B) (= just their stake in M3 Inc is worth $22B alone, remember Sony, with their large, diversified revenue streams & assets only has a market cap of $128B?)
  • Sony Pictures has a great upcoming movie slate (MCU Spider-Man, Uncharted, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Venom 2, Morbius, Spider-Verse sequel, Hotel Transylvania 4, Peter Rabbit 2, Vivo, The Nightingale). They will profit from the theatre reopening and covid recovery. They may even become more favourable among movie theatre chains because they won’t release their movies on the same day on streaming services like Warner (and yeah movie theatres are here to stay, at least for a while imho)
  • All the above comes on top of established, mature markets (Financial Holdings & Electronic Products)
  • Oh yeah, btw though TV’s are a cyclical and mature market and are not that important for Sony Group Corporation’s bottomline*, Sony TV’s will continue to do well for the following successive years: o 2020: continued pandemic boost
  1. 2020-2021: PS5 / Xbox Series X/S
  2. 2021 Summer Olympics (tv sales ALWAYS spike during the olympics) (& the effect is more pronounced for high-end TV’s, = good for Sony because Sony’s market share is concentrated in the high-end range (they are market leader in the high-end range)
  3. 2022 FIFA world cup (exact same thing as for the olympics)
  4. You could say it’s already priced in, but the stock is already ridiculously undervalued so idk…
You would think this company somehow has a bad outlook, but that could not be further from the true, let me explain and go over some of the different divisions and explain why they will moon:
Sony Entertainment
While Netflix, Disney, AT&T, Amazon, and Apple are waging the great streaming war, Sony has been quietly building its anime streaming empire over the past years.
  • Sony recently acquired Crunchyroll for $1.175B (it is a great deal for Sony imho and will immediately be more valuable under Sony. Considering the growing appetite for anime I honestly do not even understand why AT&T sold it, they could have integrated it with their other streaming service (HBO Max) but ok)
  • With Crunchyroll Sony now has the following anime empire:
  • Aniplex (anime production & distribution, subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment Japan) F
  • Funimation
  • Manga Entertainment UK (production, licensing, and distribution, UK)
  • Wakanam (licensing and distribution in Europe)
  • AnimeLab (licensing and distribution in Australia & New Zealand)
  • Crunchyroll (3 million paying subcribers, 90 million registered users and 50 million social media followers)
* Why anime matters:

Anime growth
“The global size is expected to reach USD 36.26 billion by 2025, registering a CAGR of 8.8% over the forecast period, according to a study conducted by Grand View Research, Inc. Growing popularity and sales of Japanese anime content across the globe apart from Japan is driving the growth”
(tl;dr anime 🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀, Sony is all in on anime and they have pretty much no competition)
Anime is the fastest growing subsegment of movies/video entertainment worldwide.
  • Sony also has a partnership with Bilibili for anime distribution in China:
https://www.chinadaily.com.cn/a/201903/26/WS5c990d93a3104842260b2737.html
  • Bilibili already partnered with Sony Music Entertainment Japan to bring Aniplex’s hugely successful Aniplex’s Fate/Grand Order mobile game in China.
  • Sony acquired a 5% stake in Bilibili for $400M in March 2020 (that 5% stake is now already worth $2.33B at Bilibili’s current share price ($BILI) and imho $BILI still has lots of upside potential considering it is the de facto video creation/sharing/viewing à la YouTube/Twitch for GenZ in China)
https://ir.bilibili.com/news-releases/news-release-details/bilibili-announces-equity-investment-sony

Sony Music Entertainment Japan
Aniplex
  • Sony Music (mobile games) generated $400M revenue from its mobile games in Q2 FY2020, published through Aniplex (Sony Music Entertainment Japan, “SMEJ”) subsidiary
  • They are the publisher of Fate/Grand Order, one of the most profitable mobile video games of the past 5 years (has generated $4B in revenue (!!) by the end of 2019 and is still as popular as ever). Fate/Grand order is the 7th most profitable mobile game in revenue worldwide as of 2020 (!)
Fate/Grand Order #9 game by revenue last year as of Q3 2020

  • Aniplex launched Disney: Twisted Wonderland in March this year. In Q3, it was the #10 most downloaded mobile game in Japan. (Aniplex now has two top ten games in Japan)
  • Fate/Grand Order was the #2 most tweeted game in 2020 and #3 was Disney: Twisted Wonderland. You can see that Aniplex has two hugely successful mobile games. (we are talking close to $1B of revenue a year here). It is the #2 game in Japan by total revenue from Q1 2016 to Q3 2020 and the #9 game in worldwide revenue from Q1 2020 to Q3 2020.
Aniplex has two very popular mobile games
  • SMEJ earns about > $1B from mobile games in revenue from mobile games and there is still a lot of future growth potential here considering Japan’s mobile game market grew a whopping 32% yoy from Q3 2019 to Q3 2020.
  • Aniplex recently co-distrubuted the movie Demon Slayer: Mugen Train in Japan in October 2020. It became the highest grossing film of all time in Japan with a total gross box office revenue of $380M. In the middle of a pandemic. It still needs to release in South Korea, China and USA where it will most likely do great as well.
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) (Game & Netwerk Services business unit):

  • We all know 2020 was a huge year for video games with the stay-at-home pandemic boost. The whole video game sector brought in $180B of revenue in 2020, a whopping 20% increase yoy.
  • But 2020 will not be just a one-off temporary exceptional year for video games. The video game market has a CAGR of 13% which means it will be worth $291B in 2027. Video games is by far the segment with the highest growth rate in the whole entertainment industry.

US video game market growth (worldwide growth has a 13% CAGR)

PlayStation revenue and operating profit growth

  • PlayStation obviously has a huge piece of this pie and over the past years has seen consistent yoy revenue and profit growth. Think about it, for every FIFA/Call of Duty/Assassin’s Creed sold on PS4/PS5, Sony gets a 30% cut. There have been sold a billion PS4 games so far.
  • 5 years ago 20 to 30% of PS4 games were purchased digitally. Flashforward to 2020 and it’s 60-75% and the digital ratio looks set to still increase a bit. This means higher profit margin for game publishers and for Sony at the expense of retailers
  • SIE has seen huge success in its first-party games over the past 5 years. Spider-Man, God of War, Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Last of Us Part 2, Uncharted 4, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, Ratchet & Clank have all been huge successes. This is really big and represents a big change compared to the previous generations where Sony never really hit it big as a games publisher even though most of their games were considered quality games.
  • SIE is now not only a powerful platform holdeprovider, but also a very successful games publisher with popular IP’s (Uncharted, God of War, The Last of Us, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, Ratchet & Clank). This is an enormous asset, because firstly it increases the chances of success for cross-media opportunities (Sony Pictures can make TV shows and movies out of it to expand the popularity of those IP’s even more). And secondly, it is an obvious selling point for PS5. The more popular and bigger their exclusive content, the more they can draw people to their platform/service. This should increases PS5 total marketshare over its competitor.
  • The hype for God of War: Ragnarok will be absolutely through the roof. Hype for Horizon: Forbidden West is also very good already (10 million yt views, 273K likes which is very good). Gran Turismo 7 and Ratchet & Clank will also do very well in 2021. (I suspect that GoW oand Horizon might be delayed to 2022)
  • PS5 reception has been extremely good. Demand is through the roof as well all know. The only problem is that they cannot quite capitalize on the demand due to lack of supply, but overall, it is a very good thing that demand is very high, and that reception has been very positive. The challenge will primarily supply and production-related for the following 6 months and to be able to maintain brand momentum. Hopefully, they won’t push disappointed/inpatient customers to competitors.
  • Considering there’s backwards compatibility from PS4 to PS5, users will want all their PSN content to transition with them as well, so I expect them to lose very little marketshare to Xbox. Also, I do not know if Americans realize it, but Xbox is not nearly as big as PlayStation in the rest of the world as it is in the USA. PlayStation just has global brand power that Xbox just doesn’t have, so Xbox isn’t much of threat at all I’d say. Where I live, in Belgium, In Europe everyone is talking about the PS5, nobody really seems to care about Xbox Series S/X that much. Comparing PlayStation to Xbox in terms of mindshare is like comparing Apple to Motorola (not meant to be a diss to Motorola, I have a Motorola phone myself, just saying that Xbox has significantly less mindshare / brand power in Europe).
  • SIE is likely working on PSVR 2, this could be big.
  • Sony has a small stake in Epic Games (1.4%) and they have a good business relationship with them, so this might also make them open to release first-party games on Epic Games Store after exclusivity period on PS5.
  • Remember the Travis Scott concert in Fortnite? I believe that was one of the reasons why Sony invested in Epic Games. It serves as an example how music can sometimes converge with video games, and this can play to Sony’s strengths.
  • PlayStation also has way superior presence in Asia compared to Xbox. Have been expanding into China as well. Another great opportunity for revenue growth.
  • PS+ subscribers grew from 5.7 million by the end of 2013 to 46 million by October 30th, 2020. This is an average growth rate of 28% over the past 5 years. Considering most of the growth was early on, it will slow down, but I predict that they will have about 70 million PS+ subscribers by the end of 2023. This is huge and represents a stable, recurring source of income. Investors who keep hyping Netflix/Disney+ will love this, but it seems they have yet to discover $SNE.
  • There is a reason why Amazon, Google, Nvidia have been aggressively investing in video games & games streaming. They know the business is huge and is about to get even bigger. But considering the established, loyal PlayStation userbase, the established global brand of PlayStation and the exclusive games, PlayStation should be able to easily standoff competition from Amazon, Google and Nvidia (GeForce Now) in the next few years. So far, Amazon’s venture into game development, publishing & streaming has completely failed. Stadia and GeForceNow seem to have a bit more success, but still relatively niche. Therefore, I think PlayStation is well-positioned to remain one of the leaders in the industry for the following decade.
I'll get to the other divisions later, I figured this is a good first step.
But so far the tl;dr

What subscriptions do you pay for and how do you track them?

From magazines to Netflix or recipe websites, what services are you willing to keep up the monthly fee for? What do you pay for alone vs share accounts and costs with family/friends? Are there any services that are geared towards FIRE or women in the working world that you find valuable?
Making a list of mine, it definitely adds up.
Tallying everything up, I was surprised to see how many services I have access to but don't pay for. If I wasn't able to share with family, I don't think I would have more than one streaming service. It's crazy how all streaming has split into individual costs now!

[DISCUSSION] I think it's time we admit that "Damn Daniel" wasn't a main /r/popheadscirclejerk meme, and I have the receipts to prove it.

Introduction

In case you haven't noticed (which many of you might not have, as will become clear soon) for the better part of 2020 this sub is technically themed around the song "Damn Daniel" by Bree Runway featuring Yung Baby Tate. Emphasis on the word "technically" because really, who are we fooling? The “Damn Daniel” era has flopped and I think this is something we need to leave behind in 2020.
I bring this up not out of malice, but out of sadness, because I have been trying to help “Damn Daniel” get traction, I really have. Every time some new meme springs up I spend all day wracking my brain for how I can spin it to be “Damn Daniel” related because I know that if I don’t, no one will. It shouldn’t be like that, I should be able to log onto this sub and see the song in the banner represented in the content without having to put in all of the legwork myself. Isn’t this a community? Think of the countless MINUTES I’ve spent using the Mac’s default photo viewer’s magic wand function to copy and paste Bree and Yung’s faces onto classic paintings… when did this become MY responsibility when I already work 40 hours a week?
But enough about me, let’s talk about “Damn Daniel” (since you bitches refuse to).

History

I want to kick us off with a little history lesson because I don’t think a lot of people quite understand why “Damn Daniel” is the current sub banner. This sub had a “Juice” header basically since the song came out because (although this is hard to believe now) there was a time when Lizzo was underrated and we all thought “Juice” was gonna be her breakthrough. That didn’t pan out but anyways, after a series of homophobic/racist/generally offensive posts were made on the sub (or rather the sub stopped being niche enough that people actually began to notice what a cesspool it was) it was locked and a series of new mods were added. The new mod team decided to actually put some effort into the presentation of the sub and it was decided that the theme needed an overhaul.
The opportunity for a change presented itself when Australian boy band 5SOS bested Dua Lipa’s much circle jerked sophomore effort Future Nostalgia for the #1 slot on the UK charts and the sub became 5SOS… however almost immediately afterwards this happened and the mods needed to find a new theme on short notice. “Damn Daniel,” which had been recently released and was popular with members of the mods team, happened to be at the right place at the right time.
“Damn Daniel” fit the blueprint of what made “stream Juice” such a hit: it was a throwback pop track by an up-and-comer rap girl who deserved a little bit of promo. On paper the transition made sense but in practice it was… less smooth. The decision came from the mod team, not the users, and it received mixed results. “Damn Daniel” got a little bit of buzz and some lip service from users but I don’t feel like it was ever truly embraced by the GP (general popheadscirclejerkers) in the over half a year since its release.
I’m not just pulling this out of my ass though like Taylor Swift scraping together enough b-sides and outtakes to release Evermore, I actually put in some work and have numbers to back this proposition up.

Chart Battle: Damn Daniel vs. Juice

An immediate answer to the popularity of “Damn Daniel” vs. “Juice” is to simply search both terms and see what the results are.
Neither keyword that I searched is particularly common so we can be reasonably assured that each post in the results was referencing the songs in question, and at a glance it seems that “Juice” vastly outstrips “Damn Daniel” in popularity. But of course not all shitposts will include the name of the song they’re referencing in the title, so perhaps there was more data that was hiding. I decided to get a bit more abstract and search the terms “Lizzo” and “Bree Runway” (the singers of “Juice” and “Damn Daniel,” respectively) and the results will shock you!
I switched the keyword search to the more inclusive “Bree” and I found that there were only 7 hits for her name in the entire history of the sub, meaning that Lizzo gets basically just as much lip service in a month as Bree has received in five years. Obviously this is a bit unbalanced as Lizzo is the bigger name and has been in the public eye for a bit longer and there’s still no way to account for shitposts that are purely visual (meaning there is no reference in the title) but still, things don’t look good for Bree’s main career.
But let's dig deeper! As of the time that I'm writing this post /popheadscirclejerk has 27,504 subscribers, and yet when we compare this number of users to the views/streams of "Damn Daniel" across various platforms:
Form "Damn Daniel" Takes Number of Streams/Views Average Number of Views/Streams Per /popheadscirclejerk User
Spotify Streams 805984 29.3
Official Music Video 322983 11.74
Official Lyric Video 9847 0.36
Behind the Scenes Video 5881 0.21
Now, Apple Music doesn’t publicly display its streaming numbers but let’s just assume they’re somewhere around the same number of streams as Spotify and Amazon Music/YouTube Music/Tidal are irrelevant anyways so we can disregard those entirely, which means when we add it all up the number of combined streams across platforms is somewhere around 1,950,679, meaning that’s an average of 70.9 streams per user in the 235 days since the song has been released. You know what that means?

The average /popheads user has only streamed “Damn Daniel” 0.30170212766 times per day since its release.

That’s like once per three days if we’re rounding up, and less than ten times a month. That is just sad. I hug my father more frequently than that and I post on /popheads so you KNOW that’s weird. I believe that this demonstrates a clear lack of interest in the sub in “Damn Daniel,” both as a meme and as a song.
The most damning evidence though? When you search up the words "Damn Daniel" on the sub, this is the top result of all time. The people have spoken. And they said ”Stream Juice.”

Conclusion:

Now, obviously I respect the hustle of the mod team. Nobody in the /popheads orbit understands the value of shoving underrated music down people's throats more than me and I was actually into Bree Runway before most of you bitches anyways so I’m glad for her success. And the theme is very pretty too, the banner is really nice! Shoutout to the graphic designer!
But I think it's time we admit that it's a lost cause. I get that it makes you guys feel cool, edgy, underground, progressive, etc. to be into a song like "Damn Daniel" but if it's not coming from the heart it just comes across as sad, it makes it seem like this sub is a bunch of posers when in reality it's a bunch of losers, and I hate to see you guys misrepresented like that.
While “Juice” has aged into fine wine, “Damn Daniel” has followed in its namesake’s footsteps and become a dead meme. Bree has moved on, Yung Baby Tate has moved on… isn’t it time we do too?

/r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 30: TRUCKFIGHTERS

Like most of you, I was introduced to instrumental music as a subject in elementary school. I started first on the recorder (HOT-CROSS-BUNS) and then learned to play the saxophone. I vaguely remember some level of choice in this around grade 7 or so. Really, the biggest choice was between brass and woodwinds. Sure, some lucky kid got percussion, but that was about it.
I played the saxophone through high school. I never really gave this much thought, as I simply believed that all kids had to play an instrument, and it had to be either brass or woodwind or percussion. To be fair, there were some kids in high school that played guitar or bass or piano, but they were usually the kids that either took private lessons or learned on their own. Oh, and there was also Choir, but that was nothing like that TV show Glee.
The net result was that school taught me a lot about John Philip Sousa and not a lot about the Beatles or Black Sabbath. Also, the cool kids that started bands were the ones that (often paradoxically) weren’t in music classes at all.
Sweden does the opposite. See, in Sweden, kids overwhelmingly learn to play guitar, bass, drums and to sing vocals in school. They mostly have to go to private education to become trumpet and clarinet players. So I guess that it is not surprising that, in a nation of just over 10 million people, they have turned out a disproportionately high number of internationally popular bands - Abba, Ace of Base, Roxette, and Neneh Cherry among them. Oh, and not for nothing, but the home of Ikea is also the home of all kinds of Nordic Death Metal. It’s like an entire nation dedicated to School of Rock.
And if that nation with a population roughly equivalent to Michigan or North Carolina can be that rich in music, there is no reason why they can’t produce Stoner Rock too.
Yep, you guessed it. Today we’re visiting the great deserts of Sweden. This week’s band are TRUCKFIGHTERS.
About Them
Do you hate trucks? Do you love fighting? Coincidentally, do you also smoke marijuana? If you answered yes to one or all of these questions, then you may be Megatron be Starscream sexually identify as a Decepticon be interested in today’s featured artist.
Truckfighters are a stoner rock band from Örebro, Sweden.
Örebro, as we all know, is a chocolate cookie with creamy filling that hangs out wearing a popped collar and cheap sunglasses.
The band is really two guys - Oskar Cedermalm, who goes by the pseudonym Ozo on bass and vocals, and Niklas Källgren, who goes by the pseudonym Dango on guitar. Both are absolute beasts on their instruments. Källgren routinely starts shows by tossing his T-Shirt into the crowd and then jamming out all night. Ozo matches him note for note and belts out the lyrics. They are one of those bands that sounds great in their recordings but blow the doors off when you hear them live. They have to be experienced to be believed.
Ozo and Dango have been joined by an absolute parade of drummers. Seriously, these guys have a massive problem keeping anyone behind the kit. I am not even kidding. Since they formed in 2001, they have had eleven different drummers. ELEVEN. WTF.
The drummers that the band has had (in order) are Paco, Pezo, Pedro, Frongo, McKenzo, Pancho, Maco, Taco, Lobo, and Enzo ~~ and Bingo was his name-o.~~ The current butt in the seat goes by the name El Danno.
Fuck me but that sounds a lot like the cast of Fraggle Rock.
Truckfighters actually formed in 2001 as a side project for members of another Stoner Rock band called Firestone. Firestone had been together since 1999 and had released two albums. Truckfighters originally had four members: Ozo, Dango, drummer Paco, and another guitarist named Winfred Kennerknecht, who was known by the pseudonym Fredo in the band. Presumably, when Fredo left the band it was to go drop a ring in a volcano or something.
They were able to cut a couple of EPs in their first two years between their commitments to Firestone. The first of these was the six song Desert Cruiser EP in 2001. Most notably, this had the very first recording of the title song, which is their best known and most iconic tune. They followed this up in 2002 with the five song Heading for God’s Warehouse EP. Between the two releases and their previous band’s material, they had enough songs to begin to tour in Sweden.
Firestone came to an end as a band when they released Truckfighters vs. Firestone - Fuzzsplit of the Century. QotSA fans will see a complete parallel in this third release with the Kyuss/QotSA split EP that bridged the gap between those bands. Firestone had run its course; Truckfighters were now the main event.
But what is more important than the EP was how it was released. Källgren had started his own record label: Fuzzorama Records. This was one of the first releases on that new label, and it allowed the band to own and distribute all of their music. The band had essentially doubled down and committed to not just recording music, but to distributing it and promoting it as well.
This was an enormous undertaking, and a huge risk.
They needed a hit record or they were sunk.
Fortunately, they got one.
Gravity X was recorded in the winter of 2004-2005 and is an absolute monster of an album. It mixes Psychedelia with Desert Rock with Stoner Rock with a hint of Heavy Metal. Most of all, it has more fuzz than a three week old loaf of bread. The album has become synonymous with the band. Go grab a great set of headphones and listen to it track-for-track. You will be bobbing your head before you know it. Desert Cruiser appears again and kicks off the album. You then have another hour of pure, solid sound to enjoy. Momentum is a behemoth that is over seven minutes of pure power that draws you in and then punches you right in the face at the two minute mark. Add to this Gweedo-Weedo and Manhattan Project and A. Zapruder and the ethereal album ender Altered State and you have one hell of a record.
Gravity X gathered critical acclaim and an international audience. The band hit the touring circuit and had gigs all over Europe. Remember, these guys had been playing together for a while. To the new fans they appeared out of nowhere, but anyone who knew the inside story would not be surprised that they were astonishing in concert.
Simply put, their shows were an event.
If you met Dango or Ozo or any of the Fraggles on the street, you’d probably not give them a second glance. But put instruments in their hands and give ‘em a stage, and they absolutely transformed into a hurricane of sound. Concert goers lost their shit (and their hearing) upon seeing them live. Truckfighters quickly garnered a reputation as a must-see band. Their touring brought an audience and a demand for new music.
The band went back into the studio in 2007 and recorded their follow-up album Phi. Tracks like Atomic and Chameleon and Warhead pick up right where Gravity X left off and do not disappoint. The album is heavy and fuzzy and full of bangers. The strength of this record got them a touring gig with Fu Manchu. Fu Manchu is notable in connection to QotSA because it was former Kyuss drummer Brant Bjork’s band (though he’d been replaced by this time).
It was after this album that Fredo left to go on his quest to Mordor. Ozo and Dango and Bingo (A placeholder title for the resident drum muppet) were invested at this point and had to support an entire record label, so they decided to continue on as a power trio: Ozo, Dango, and some NPC on drums.
The newly reduced band released Mania in 2009. If you didn’t know that they had lost a member, you’d never notice a reduction in sound. If anything, the fuzz got thicker and louder. Monte Gargano (and the weird video which is some kind of mashup of material from someone’s old home movies) showed that the band were here to stay. The more than thirteen minutes of grooves and jams in Majestic reinforced this. Heading back out on the road, they toured with The Atomic Bitchwax. They kept up this unrelenting pace through 2010 and 2011. They finally crossed the Atlantic to do shows in America that same year.
Not for nothing, but The Atomic Bitchwax is my nickname for my ex-girlfriend.
German filmmaker Joerg Steineck had seen Truckfighters in Europe and decided that he wanted to chronicle the rise of the band. He put together a documentary called Truckfighters Fuzzomentary. Fu Manchu and Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri appear in the film, and express incredible admiration for the band. Josh, a guy who knows what he likes, called Truckfighters “the best band that’s ever existed.”
Steineck’s film (which is 84 minutes well invested, and shows Ozo and Dango and Nintendo to be ordinary guys living ordinary lives who are extraordinary on stage) brought even more fans to the band. The film and the new album and the no-shit endorsement by Ginger Jesus saw the band tour the US and South America and Australia. They reissued their back catalogue and it sold out. They played shows all over the world and were now regulars on the festival circuit.
By 2014, they had released the album Universe, which was a kind of thematic album with songs as chapters in a story. No, don’t worry, they didn’t go all silly and high concept. They stopped with the song titles. The fuzz on this disc is relentless, as shown in Mind Control and Get Lifted. There is even a shot at another band we’ve covered in the closing song of the album, titled Mastodont. I guess they don’t like it when drummers sing (not that they’ve had one stay around long enough to find out).
Their final album, V, dropped in 2016. No, it is not a reference to the campy 80’s sci-fi TV show. It denotes that this was their fifth album. It is seven tracks of pure power, led by The 1 and Gehenna and Calm Before The Storm. That last track is a real builder that takes you to the edge and then pushes you right off.
Interestingly, I really only got into Truckfighters in early 2018. They showed up on my Spotify recommended list and I took a deep fucking dive. I was super excited and even started looking up concert dates near me.
That was when I found out that they had broken up.
Fuckity Fuck Fuck Fuck. I had just discovered them and they had already called it quits. That sucked worse than the time I bought all those shares in Blockbuster.
...but I digress.
The band had been keeping up an unrelenting pace of touring and, simply put, Ozo and Dango and Oreo were tired. They needed down time and a rest. QotSA fans remember that our own desert heroes did the same thing between Era Vulgaris and ...Like Clockwork.
Turns out that the rest was all they needed. In 2019, they hit the road once again. This time they were doing a tour in celebration of their landmark first album. The tour, entitled Gravity X: From Finish to Start, had them play the entire album in reverse order. They toured with fellow Fuzzorama artists (and an amazing band in their own right) Valley of the Sun.
You bet your ass I saw them on this tour. Front row center in Detroit. They killed it.
Believe the hype. I have seen QotSA multiple times, and they are always amazing. But these guys put on a show that you just have to experience. They are that good.
Links to QOTSA
Josh and Nick and the rest of Kyuss invented the desert sound that Truckfighters play.
Truckfighters have become a staple of Fuzz that play at festivals all over the globe in celebration of the glory that is stoner rock, and they have toured with Brant Bjork’s old band Fu Manchu.
Josh is well known to be a huge fan of the band, as evidenced by his appearance in the documentary about them.
Their Music
Desert Cruiser - live at Wacken Open Air 2015. Before you ask, yes, Dango is naturally that sweaty. It is even more apparent when he jumps at you directly off the stage. I am not fucking kidding.
Momentum - “Roses are read, Ikea is blue, When I listen to Momentum, My neighbors do too”
Manhattan Project - Fun fact: the whole nuke thing was actually named after this song out of respect to the sheer power of its riffs. [Citation Needed]
Chameleon - 10 minutes of pure, powerful build. Sit back and enjoy the sludge.
Atomic - complete with a 5 minute video advertisement for nuclear power (and by that I mean a sick fanmade video featuring a fuckload of nuke test footage).
Monte Gargano - A music video that reaches the true potential of home recordings, in that it consists mostly of squash, shitty disco bars, and nude women.
Majestic - 13 mins of fuzz.
Mind Control - I guess you could say that they’re not only in your mind, but in your mind fuzz (wait, shit, wrong write up).
The 1 - Since it’s off the album V, playing this song 5 times actually means you’ve listened to the entire record.
Calm Before The Storm - One hell of a song, with one hell of a dark video.
Show Them Some Love
/Truckfighters
Only 128 members. Fuck me, the band has had more drummers than that.

Here's a list of The Midnight's songs, remixes and mashups which are not found on their Spotify page - Updated December 2020

Some of their songs may be obscure to some because they're not under the band's Spotify page, or only available on Youtube. If there are any songs you know which are not listed below, please comment and I'll add them!
Note: Although I'm using Youtube links for the most part, the songs could still be available on Spotify if you search for them. They're just not listed in the band's page that's all.
Works by The Midnight:
1) Bend (fantastic song!)
2) Explorers (The Sims 4 version) (sung in Simlish language)
3) Jon Bellion - 80's Films (The Midnight remix)
4) Scavenger Hunt - Never Enough (The Midnight remix)
5) Drake - 0 to 100 (The Midnight remix)
6) A R I Z O N A - Oceans Away (The Midnight remix)
7) The Comeback Kid (Isolation Relief mix) (the purchase of this track helps support their live band while the tours have been cancelled due to Covid-19)
8) Gloria (One Beating Heart livestream's acoustic version)
9) Memories (One Beating Heart livestream's acoustic version)
10) This incredible marriage of movie footage and their song Collateral which I think deserves its place on the list
11) The Night Game - The Outfield (The Midnight remix)
12) Timecop1983 - Static (feat. The Midnight)
13) Sometimes She Smiles (unreleased track; sounds to me like a Tyler Lyle solo-career song more than a The Midnight song)
14) Horror Show EP (currently an Amazon Exclusive; should come to other platforms some time in the future)
15) 183010165 ARG Songs (demos, etc.)
16) Chicane - Rainbow (feat. Tyler Lyle)
17) Unreleased snippets (one has Tim on vocals!)

18) Anything under the name of "Tyler Lyle", who is The Midnight's vocalist and songwriter and has a solo career. It's not synthwave though!

Unlike the previous works, the following remixes are present on their Spotify page:
Clubhouse - Kyra (The Midnight remix) (great music video!)
SYML - Clean Eyes (The Midnight remix)
Latroit, Charlz - Don't Give Up (The Midnight Remix)
The Ivy - Missing Out (The Midnight Remix)

Mashups featuring The Midnight songs:

A) Carly Rae Jepsen vs. The Midnight - Run Away At Sunset (great music video!²)
B) Ariana Grande vs. The Midnight - Into Explorers
C) Katy Perry vs. The Midnight - Jason Wide Awake
D) Audien vs. The Midnight - We Move Once
E) Taylor Swift vs. The Midnight - American Love Story
F) Taylor Swift vs. The Midnight - Collateral Style
G) Bone Thugs vs. The Midnight - Tha Crossroads
H) Wiz Khalifa vs. The Midnight - Roll Up
I) Whitney Houston vs. The Midnight - I Wanna Dance At Sunset
J) Katy Perry vs. The Midnight - Los Angeles Dreams

Homages to The Midnight by other artists:

W) PRIZM - Midnight FM (also features FM-84 songs)
X) Michael Oakley - Turn Back Time (tribute to the song "Los Angeles")
Y) Preston Knight - Acrylic ("Collateral" with vocals and original lyrics)
Z) Naani's wonderful music videos made from film footage, which feature many The Midnight songs (sadly, has deleted all videos on channel as of January 22th 2021, perhaps due to copyright issues?)

Covers & Remixes:

AA) Los Angeles (iMart x Kate acoustic cover)
BB) The Neon Syndicate - several covers
CC) Light Years (Juan Gutierrez & Cody Phillip Booth cover)
DD) Kids (Astrale & Essenger remix/cover) (also on Spotify)
EE) Lost Boy (PRXZM remix/cover) (not to be confused with PRIZM above)
FF) Comeback Kid (PRXZM remix/cover)
GG) The Midnight Remixed 02 (this album is not under their Spotify page for whatever reason!)
HH) All the remixes in the Midnight's Remix Contest Radio
II) Mikael Alafriz's mind-blowing piano cover of Crystalline
JJ) Steven Parry's cover medleys
KK) Los Angeles (AerialHiking's calming piano remix)

Again, please help me add in any missing songs.

3 Years Ago Today: Headie One drops 'The One' mixtape ☝🏾

3 Years Ago Today: Headie One drops 'The One' mixtape ☝🏾
Three years ago today, Headie One dropped his first solo UK Drill project:
The One (25 December 2017)

Headie One was released from prison at the start of 2017, and decided to take music more seriously as a free man:
In July 2017 he dropped the 'Drillers x Trappers' mixtape with OFB member RV. He maintained his run by releasing highly rated freestyles and tracks:
With this momentum, Headie went on to drop The One on Christmas Day 2017. The project includes verses from OFB members RV, Skat and Tuggzy, as well as features from Loski, Monkey, Dimzy, K Trap, M Huncho, Sleeks and Colo.
Due to sample clearance issues, the original Track 9 "Oneder" was removed and eventually replaced by "Know Better".

Track Title Audio/Video
1 Intro 'Intro' audio
2 The One 'The One' audio
3 Golden Boot 'Golden Boot' music video
4 Ganging 'Ganging' music video
5 Take Risks 'Take Risks' audio
6 Caution 'Caution' audio
7 Again 'Again' audio
8 Secure The Bag 'Secure The Bag' audio
9 Know Better 'Know Better' music video
10 Different Sorts 'Different Sorts' audio
11 One Leanin 'One Leanin' music video
12 Dues 'Dues' audio
13 Cargo 'Cargo' audio
14 Free Bradders 'Free Bradders' audio
15 Intent 'Intent' audio
- Oneder 'Oneder' audio

The One mixtape crowned Headie One's rise as an artist in the scene, and the rise of OFB in music.
'The One' (track 2) is considered one of the best intro tracks in UK Drill, and 'Know Better' quickly became one of the most iconic tracks in the UK Drill scene, on top of classics like 'Golden Boot' and 'One Leanin'. The original track 9 (Oneder) is considered one of Headie's most underrated songs.
Where would you rank 'The One' mixtape in Headie One's discography?

A small audiophile's journey in a new house - (Featuring Elac Debut 6, Tringle Br03, Kef LS50, Dali Oberon 5, Audiolab 6000a, Yamaha A-S501, A-S801, BK P12-300SB-FF, REW and equalizer APO)
1st post here, just wanted to share my small journey after moving into my first house for anyone that is interested. It will be quite long and cover two listening rooms, 1st a living room, and 2nd a small office/desktop setup. Just listing things down in the order they happened in case anyone else is wondering about the same things. Not too experienced so mostly me stumbling along in the search of decent sound.

Living Room Setup - Oberon 5

In the living room (Around 5mx3.2m) I went with some Dali Oberon 5's (floorstanders) connected to an Audiolab 6000a (integrated 2 channel amp). This plays music via a Chromecast audio in one Optical port, and via a Samsung QLED 95t on the other. This is often controlled by a Google mini with voice commands (have to turn the source on the amp manually though).
Sound from the Oberon's connected to the Samsung TV had a slight audio delay/stuttering, this turned out to be poor optical out performance on the Samsung TV (one connect cable where all audio, video, and power travels). Enabling the PLL to wide on optical 2 of the Audiolab resolved this high jitter issue. Not sure if this only relates to Samsung TV's, but more info can be found here, it did seem to be worse using the Spotify app than other apps. https://community.spotify.com/t5/Other-Partners-Web-Player-etc/Spotify-on-Samsung-TV-App-Skipping-Studdering/td-p/4689085#:~:text=Re%3A%20Spotify%20on%20Samsung%20TV%20App%20Skipping%2FStuddering&text=Make%20sure%20to%20restart%20the,and%20reinstall%20your%20Spotify%20app.
Sound from the Oberon's is great, very wide soundstage, nice imaging, and for such a small footprint speaker there is adequate bass all the way down to around 30Hz. I do not feel like the addition of a subwoofer is needed with these. Speaker placement on the Oberons was super easy, I did not find any need or have any urge to mess with the sound any further with this setup.
I can highly recommend these speakers, for the £500 I paid for these brand new (I did get a good deal but even full price I wouldn't hesitate to buy these again). They are an absolute bargain considering I feel no need for a sub-woofer and the rest of the sound is superb.

Office Setup - Bookshelf speakers

Microlab Solo6C - first setup
Br03 - Placed off the front wall
So now is the tricky room, that required much more thought and time. It is a very small 2.6mx2.7m room that has been turned into an office.
I started off with Microlab Solo6C active speakers that I had for 8 years or so, but wanted an upgrade after hearing the Dali's and I spent most of my time during the day in the office for music listening.
I purchased both Triangle Br03 (£350), and Kef LS50's (£540). The triangles had many rave reviews, and often reviews claiming they are the best speakers <$1000. The LS50's just went on sale as the META's came out so got an open box from Richer sounds for £540 to see if they were a step up over the Br03. I purchased a Yamaha A-S501 for £280 new, which has 85w per channel at 8 ohms, and 120w at 4ohms.
I also purchased the original Elac b6 debut (not the b6.2) second hand. These were a completely different sound compared to Triangle and LS50. Details were veiled, not an airy sound at all, very congested and dark sounding. These were sold and will not compare them any further, although if you are on a budget and do not plan to get a subwoofer, then these may be more suitable for you. On a song like Tessellate - Alt-J a lot of the detail is masked and much lower in volume than either the Triangle or KEF.
I got the Monoprice Monolith Speaker Stands 32 Inch height, which put the Br03 tweeter just below ear height when at my desk chair. £45 for each stand from Amazon, so both for £90 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Monolith-Inch-Speaker-Stand-Each/dp/B07DMB1GCM/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Monoprice+Monolith&qid=1608820079&s=electronics&sr=1-2
The triangles looked better IMO and I kind of wanted to prefer them over the LS50's as they were cheaper, and not as popular as the LS50 (I tend to gravitate towards things like that for some reason).
At first I liked both, so was tempted to get the triangles purely based on price. Then after a couple more days and with some A/B direct comparisons, the Kef LS50's pulled ahead. I will list the main differences I found.
Kef LS50 vs Triangle Br03 comparison
  • The Triangles were brighter (perhaps as the tweeter was higher and in line with my ear).
  • I found myself wanting to turn the volume down when listening to the Br03's (at around 70-75dB listening volume near field), some harshness in upper treble.
  • Br03 had an unnaturally airy sound, voices and instruments on the LS50's were more realistic, this stood out in certain songs in particular with the Br03. Namely female vocals, like songs from "Christine and the Queens", "Lana Del rey", "Sophie Zelmani". The LS50's felt more like the singer was here with me in the room, the Br03's felt more like the speakers were attempting to replicate female vocals in an unnatural way.
  • Kef LS50 performance with female vocals were so good that I am now listening to them much more than I previously did
  • Both had bass, but both needed a subwoofer in my room as there are frequencies just simply missing from the spectrum. Songs like "Still here - Kilo" has a nice 30-40Hz bass rumble that kicks in at around 1:15m, this was missing on both speakers and sounded great on the Oberon 5's (admittedly in a different room with better acoustics - more on this later)
  • Last note, imaging and soundstage was nice on both, the singer was placed directly behind my monitor where the speakers disappeared and you have a nice wall of sound between the speakers.
The Br03's were sent back, I had planned to keep these not the LS50's hence the A-S501 amp. Now to see in case I was missing anything as review after review listed that LS50's needed a big beefy amp and lots of current. I purchase a second hand Yamaha A-S801, this has 100w of power into 8 ohms, nice review here:https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/yamaha-a-s701-tear-down-thoughts-about-the-internals-few-measurements.9459/
Not too much changed with the 801 compared to the A-S501 to be honest, perhaps things tightened up a bit and felt "bigger" and not quite as congested. I listen nearfield and at low volumes (around 70-75dB) so I think the A-S501 had enough for the LS50 in my situation. I did end up keeping the A-S801 and sold the A-S501, part of this is due to the USB input of the 801 however.

Kef LS50's placed close to front wall - messy cables but have been testing lots of different placements
Subwoofer
Next was to address the bass, as the room was so small, I had a large bass mode at around 60Hz, and very sharp drop off after this. I purchased a subwoofer to try and rectify this - BK P12-300SB-FF from ebay ( colosussxb) Bgrade for £362 delivered. I could see no signs of why it was a B grade.
After reading threads and reviews, most people seemed to recommend setting the crossover at around 65Hz ish, as the LS50 has a slow roll off below around 80Hz. As I mentioned earlier I had a huge bass mode at 60Hz then sharp roll off. So I set the crossover for around 50-55Hz to try and fill in the lower end bass but did not have much luck. The 60Hz spike was the only bass frequency I could hear. I ordered a UMIK-1 calibrated microphone for £109 and followed a similar process to the below youtube video, using APO to EQ down my spikes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ev1bSSL8tRA
I played with my subwoofer settings and placement, and ended up setting the crossover at 100Hz and EQ'ing the big 60Hz spike down (and some other spikes). As the Yamaha integrated has no active crossover, the LS50 speakers are playing full range so that 60HZ spike got even bigger now the sub is also playing that frequency. Having the Sub play at 100hz smoothed out a few more dips I had in the upper bass range (cannot be seen from below graph). With EQ this spike is more flat, and I can now hear the sub bass notes more clearly without that room resonance booming away.
LS50 + Sub - Before EQ (Green) vs after EQ (Brown) - low pass crossover at 100Hz
The above response is pretty far from ideal I know, but after reading thread after thread that said you cannot get decent sound from a small 3x3m room without huge bass traps and acoustic panels I relatively pleased with this so far.
Next is to get a rug for the room, and potentially some wall panels or something to dampen the bass as I'd like that 48Hz dip to be slightly less pronounced but feel I would need a ton of absorption to make any meaningful difference.
The EQ I am running is from my Desktop PC, I could be tempted to try a miniDSP so I can load up my EQ settings to a hardware box and use a Chromecast audio and other inputs that do not need a PC to apply the EQ. https://www.minidsp.com/products/minidsp-in-a-box/minidsp-2x4-hd
I have also been looking at Dirac live and Audyssey but not until I treat my room slightly as I feel this is a large expense for something that could be achieved (or close to) with patience and testing in REW.
I am impressed if you got this far. If anyone has any tips on what I should try next then I am all ears...likewise any questions let me know.
Merry Christmas!
EDIT: Changed the placement of the setup in the room (rotated by 90 deg)
With sub (Brown) Vs Without sub (Purple) - No EQ
After trying another placement in the room, the bass response was much better. I have turned the sub volume down now, and I am not using any EQ.

Again, apologies for taking so long to put the results together. It’s starting to become a running theme but we’ll try to be quicker next time.
On behalf of Frostbite522, MetallicCats, and myself, thanks to everyone who took the survey! In total, we had 709 participants, another big leap over the 425 from the D:TTOL survey!
Also, thanks to SpideyCyclist for providing some of the resources and for stickying the post :)
As usual, please feel free to leave any additional comments and feedback in the thread. Hope to see you again next comeback!

Pretty similar results from the last survey for this one except for a drop in the ‘public transport’ option, which is understandable given the current situation. Stay safe everyone!

'BOCA' MV (Music Video)

Dami 6.8
SuA 4.9
JiU 3.5
Yoohyeon 3.1
Siyeon 1.3

That pink hair and ‘ai-yah’ really make Gahyeon stand out it seems

What was your favourite part of the MV?

Thanks for all the answers here. To summarise, the main highlights were JiU’s bridge, SuA’s water scenes, Siyeon’s ‘knocking door’ and high notes, Yoohyeon’s ‘Drop Thunder’, water droplets and bow scenes, Dami’s ‘Hold Up’ part, and Pink haired Gahyeon’s rap section. As a whole, many liked the cinematography, transitions, colour palette, dresses, and the circle formation choreo in particular.

What concept would you like to see in their next comeback?

Concept wise, the general consensus wants DC to keep with the fantasy/scifi theme for the next comeback. Plenty of mentions of gothic, horror, vampire, werewolf, witches, demons vs angels, zombie, cyberpunk, steampunk themes. Since they already teased utopia as a potential next storyline, some people mentioned they want to go towards a lighter theme, maybe with a more hopeful tone.
Most importantly, we want Handong back.

Feedback and Comments

Thank you for all the kind words and feedback! As usual, we’ll be taking all of it into consideration for the next comeback survey and hopefully make it an even more enjoyable experience.
In terms of the comeback, most people really enjoyed everything about it, from the album, stages, MVs, performances, visuals, and even the stylists, Azurer team, choreographers, and dancers. It was great to see so many comments from both long time fans as well as newer Somnias who were experiencing their first comeback.
Although some people said that the music style for this comeback wasn’t their favourite, we all seem to be happy at how successful this comeback was in terms of sales and wish to keep the momentum going for the next comeback as ot7 with more sales, variety shows, and that first win!
Speaking of which, we all really miss Handong and can’t wait to see her back with the group :)
As for the survey itself, thanks for all the suggestions. We’ll be once again tweaking the photocard section as we have for every survey so far and hopefully it’ll be better next time. Some of you have also suggested putting in a ‘skip’ button for the ‘Album Purchase’ section, which we might implement next time.
That about wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to participate in the survey and we hope to see you very soon for the next comeback!
